Psychology Q & A
What is psychology?
Psychology is a branch of medicine in which a board-certified psychologist evaluates, diagnoses, and treats mental health disorders.
Examples include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), substance abuse, eating disorders, and more.
Seeking treatment with Dr. Cho and his team can equip you to better overcome challenges related to mental health struggles – such as chronic stress, constant sadness, social anxiety, fearfulness, and much more.
What are the symptoms of mental health disorders?
Symptoms of mental health disorders range from mild to severe. Examples include:
- Confusion
- Inability to concentrate
- Constant sadness
- Worthlessness, guilt, or self-doubt
- Excessive worry or fear
- Anger or extreme mood changes
- Social withdrawal or isolation
- Constant fatigue
- Sleeping problems
- Weight loss or weight gain
- Relationship problems
- Drug or alcohol abuse
- Thoughts of suicide
You might experience situational mental health challenges if you lose a job, get diagnosed with a chronic disease, or experience divorce or the loss of a loved one.
How does my provider diagnose mental health disorders?
To diagnose a mental health disorder and develop a treatment plan, Dr. Cho reviews your medical history, including your mental health history and current symptoms.
He might complete a physical exam and recommend you undergo blood tests (or other diagnostic tests) to detect or rule out underlying medical problems. Dr. Cho also completes a comprehensive mental health assessment to establish an appropriate treatment plan.
What are my psychology treatment options?
Some of the many psychology treatments available with Dr. Cho and the Apex Medical Center team include:
Individual counseling
During one-on-one counseling, Dr. Cho helps you develop behavioral change strategies that make it easier to overcome mental health issues. He helps you better understand the possible causes of your illness and personalizes each counseling session to meet your needs.
Marriage and family counseling
Marriage and family counseling can help you and your loved ones positively resolve conflicts. Dr. Cho works with you as a couple or in a group to create an environment that fosters healthy relationships.
Group therapy
During group therapy, you meet with other people struggling with similar mental health struggles. For example, if you need help overcoming substance abuse or another addiction, Dr. Cho might recommend group therapy.
Medications
Taking medications, along with counseling, can help you overcome mental health challenges and reduce symptoms that prevent you from living life to its fullest.
